Serious Training and Fun wrapped up in one 15 x 5 camper trailer set up to replicate a child’s home and what the atmosphere would be like if it were to have a fire.
EQUIPMENT:
KFSH has three training rooms (living room, kitchen, and bedroom located upstairs) equipped with items actually found in the home.
TRAINING:
The trailer is equipped with a phone system, which allows kids to practice dialing 911. This system allows the kids to have an actual conversation with a volunteer. You would be surprised how the kids react. Items that may be covered during the training experience are (but not limited to) -what number do we dial if we have an emergency, who can 911 send to help us, do we play with lighters and matches and if our friends are what should we do, pot handles turned inward on the stove to prevent accidents, no pot holders or towels left on the stove, take the pot holder with you if you leave the kitchen (a reminder that there is something on the stove), a safe meeting place for the entire family (something easy for everyone to remember), do not call 911 from inside, do not go back inside for any reason, sleep with bedroom doors closed, roll out of bed-crawl low to the floor-check door with back portion of the hand-if hot fire could be on the other side-crawl low to the floor to the 2nd way out and go to the safe meeting place-then dial 911 and wait for them to tell you it is ok to hang up.
This tool allows us to make their SERIOUS situation into a fun training experience. The more we practice with them the easier it will be for them to remember what they are supposed to do without panicking during a true emergency.
